Northeast Neighbors (NeN) is the City-chartered neighborhood for the area that includes all lands within the urban growth boundary north of Randy Pape Beltline between the Willamette River and North Game Farm Road. Northeast Neighbors was created in 2011 when the Cal Young Neighborhood Association was subdivided into three neighborhoods. (See map of NeN area.)
We are committed to helping our neighbors increase their sense of community, to creating events that offer opportunities to meet one another, and to helping inform neighbors of issues that affect them.

NeN’s Food Drive Saturday, Feb. 13, noon-4pm
AN ASTOUNDING SUCCESS! |
Northeast Neighbors held a food drive on Saturday, February 13, at Harvest Community Church. Nine of our neighbors staffed the site and received the donations from 140 of our neighbors. We easily filled the four barrels we were allotted by Food for Lane County and filled the hallways of the church's school with the donations. Since the beginning of the pandemic, millions of Americans worry about nearly empty refrigerators and barren cupboards for their children and themselves. In Lane County, the need for food security has greatly increased and those people without jobs and folks affected by the Holiday Farm Fire depend more on food pantries. Our drive was part of a larger effort with neighborhoods all across the city gathering canned food for Food For Lane County. If you would like to make a credit card donation, click here: https://fundraise.foodforlanecounty.org/NeighborsHelpingNeighbors21 Neighborhood volunteers ran the event. We are very grateful to Jackie Booth, Steve Robinson, Nancy Johnson, Rick Alderson, Mary Hogan, Nancy Scott, NeN Board members Kirstin London and Anne Millhollen, Board Chairman Kevin Reed, and Julie Ulm at the Harvest Community Church for making the day possible. And Thank you to all our neighbors who donated! |
Many are interested in House Bill 2001. We’ve linked to the project page below and want to make sure you’re aware of the Middle Housing survey that is live now (and open through March 5).

The Middle Housing Survey is now live on Engage Eugene! The survey will be open on Engage Eugene through March 5, 2021, and participants will be entered to win one of two $50 grocery gift cards. Please spread the word and share this survey with your networks, friends, and neighbors.
Bloodworks NW provides 100% of the blood to Lane County. Due to COVID-19, we have had to suspend all of our mobile drives (which means of 60% of our blood collections).
While we have established Pop-Up Donor Centers, we are not seeing the recovery of the 60% loss in blood collection. Additionally, hospital usage has increased by 20%!!

A new and free online driver training program offered through the Lane Regional Council of Governments (LCOG) and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). The Oregon Friendly Driver Program covers a diversity of safe driving techniques, including some great material that often isn’t covered in traditional driver education programs, such as safety training related to sharing the road with bicyclists and pedestrians.
We are aware a recent announcement by the federal government of increased immigration enforcement to begin across the country next week may cause fear and uncertainty in our Eugene community.
Eugene’s vision is a welcoming, safe, and inclusive city for people from all walks of life. It is important to respect and embrace other cultures and wisdom as it makes us collectively richer .
As I commented in the past, just about everyone you meet here is descended from someone who bravely left their country to become part of ours, and then provide amazing contributions to our communities. Some have arrived more recently than others and there are some important things to know about how the City of Eugene has worked and is still working to preserve your safety and make Eugene a comfortable place for you and your family.
The City of Eugene has protection for every individual. Here is our promise:
• Resolution 5174 that we, as a City, are committed to being a welcoming, inclusive and safe community for everyone
• Resolution 5073 that we have a supportive Statement of Principles for Immigrant Integration
On March 13, 2017 the Eugene City Council unanimously passed the Protection for Individuals Ordinance (Council Ordinance Number 20579). This ordinance provides certain protections for all Eugene residents, including immigrants. This action puts provisions into City Code preventing the use of City resources (money, equipment or personnel, including from Eugene Police) to detect or apprehend individuals whose only violation of the law is that they are present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws.
Furthermore, Eugene also abides by Oregon law, not federal law, on immigration matters. Specifically, ORS 181A.820 prohibits our involvement in any administrative or civil immigration matter. The statute does give some limited latitude for local police to: exchange information about immigration matters with federal authorities when a crime is involved, or arrest a subject wanted on a federal arrest warrant for an immigration crime signed by a federal judge.
The Eugene Police Department has had and will continue to have a prohibition on using its resources, whether personnel or other, for immigration and customs enforcement efforts.
My commitment as chief is to these resolutions, ordinance, and law, and to making sure that regardless of documentation status, you feel safe to report crime, be a witness, and engage with the community, without fears of immigration enforcement. All of my employees have this same commitment to you, reflecting the same values as I and the City hold regarding this matter.
I want our police force to be culturally responsive so that every officer, dispatcher, records specialist or other employee understands the cultures and concerns of Eugene immigrant communities and interacts with them in a respectful and empathetic manner. Eugene Police recruitment and training is aimed at cultivating a workforce that is reflective of everyone in our community, and we have committed to providing field-based language access for individuals who are more monolingual by providing incentives for Spanish-speaking employees to undergo competency testing prior to being listed for response.
Thank you for being a part of our community and please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have questions.

NeN Development Summary

I want to sincerely thank everyone who has participated in fundraising to build a picnic shelter in Creekside Park! The Northeast Neighbors joined the Eugene Cascade Lions Club on this project in May, 2015. Over the last five and half years we have collected and returned hundreds of thousands of cans and bottles. We have also received thousands of dollars in cash donations from generous folks in our neighborhood.
Thankfully, we are now moving into the construction phase. Although I have invested in this project for many years, my role is now coming to an end. Therefore, Gilham Community Church is no longer collecting cans and bottles. In January I plan to move to Yamhill for a new job, but I look forward to visiting Eugene and seeing this picnic shelter when it is complete. Thank you for investing in our wonderful community!

Let's Get a Great Namefor Our New Park |
Next summer, work begins turning Striker Field, just north of Crescent Village, into an 8 acre neighborhood park. This would not be happening without a lot of you neighbors asking for it, designing it, and meeting about it. Now we get to name it. The process is simple: 1. You submitted your ideas. Go to engage.eugene-or.gov/striker 2. Parks narrows the list to follow City guidelines. 3. We voted beginning Nov. 30 to pick our top three options. This phase ended December 11. 4. Councillor Jennifer Yeh will pick one of those three and announce the winner on December 18. Let's make sure we end up with a name that we're all proud of. (For some added incentive, if the person who first submits that winning name is also on the NeN email list, they'll get a little extra attention!) The park design includes a large playground, walking paths, court games (basketball, pickleball, petanque), restrooms, a picnic shelter, and an informal ampitheater for community gatherings. And, yes, a parking lot. |

A well-planned transportation system supports a thriving community. The City of Eugene and Lane Transit District received public input in April on transportation investment packages for five of our major streets: River Road, Highway 99, Coburg Road, MLK, Jr. Blvd., and 30th Avenue to Lane Community College.
