A New Yorker magazine article, The Really Big One, addresses the possibility of a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in the Pacific Northwest.
Disasters are major events that can strike anywhere and at any time. In a disaster, traditional 9-1-1 and first responder capabilities such as fire, police, medics and utility personnel will be overwhelmed and unable to immediately assist individuals.
Knowing your neighbors can give you a critical advantage during an emergency. Good community relationships can help keep your family and neighborhood safe and simplify your family communication plan. By taking these simple steps, you and your neighbors can be better prepared:
1. Make arrangements with your neighbors to check on each other's homes and pets when traveling.
2. Find out what specialized knowledge, skills, and equipment members of your community possess.
Knowing what is available to you in the event of a disaster can make your response more effective.
The Map Your Neighborhood program guides you and your neighbors through simple steps to help enhance your preparedness for an emergency. These steps will help you to quickly and safely take actions that can minimize damage and protect lives.

Personal Preparedness: What basic supplies would you need to survive until more help comes following an emergency? A three-day emergency supply kit is a basic tool for providing peace of mind, comfort and survival needs in the face of disaster. To prepare for a major disaster, a two-week supply is needed.
The American Red Cross’ list of the basic supplies to have in an emergency kit includes:
• Water — one gallon per person, per day
• Food — nonperishable, easy-to-prepare items
• Flashlight
• Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
• Extra batteries
• First aid kit
